American Dental Association Recognizes Four Categories of Teeth Whitening

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), teeth whitening products and procedures fall into four main categories: professionally applied in-office, dentist-prescribed for at-home use, over-the-counter and non-dental options. Although the first three categories offer ADA accepted products and procedures, they differ in many ways, so it is important to consult with your dentist prior to making a final decision on what will work best for your unique situation.

One popular method of teeth whitening is through over-the-counter products. It may be as simple as whitening toothpaste or may involve a longer process of applying whitening strips. Other products available for purchase include whitening gum, mouthwash, paint-on gels and more. Typically, the over-the-counter options do not actually change the color of the teeth as bleaching agents do; those with the ADA Seal of Acceptance simply remove stains better than other products because they possess special chemical or other agents.

A similar option that may result in even whiter teeth is an at-home treatment provided by your dentist. If this is the best choice for teeth whitening, you will likely be provided a custom-fit mouthpiece and a bleaching gel, along with a schedule for use. Although dentist-prescribed at-home whitening processes will vary, the regime will likely last 1-2 weeks, with 1-2 applications per day.

Your dentist can provide the strongest method of whitening during an in-office session. Professional bleaching products contain a hydrogen peroxide concentration of up to 35%, compared to the 10% carbamide peroxide level of take-home products. During the appointment, protective material will be placed on the gums, bleaching agents will be applied to the teeth and lights or lasers may be used on top to create a whiter smile.

The fourth category of teeth whitening is non-dental related. Whitening is now being offered on some cruises, at spas and salons, mall kiosks and more. However, many states have now made the decision to only allow teeth whitening procedures to be performed by trained dentists or personnel such as our Elkhart Teeth Whitening dental office.

If you’re interested in whiter teeth, reach out to Dr. Watkins about these available options to find out which will best serve your purpose. Some of the products may cause sensitivity or may not work at all, so an initial consultation is typically advised.
